It's been a rather full couple of weeks. I've been playing piano with my new best friends 'The Theory' http://www.myspace.com/theorythe and am on the verge of being part of the band. I have now moved into my new apartment, have a decent bed and my back is recovering from the trials of the one that was there when I moved in. In the process of decorating and making it more homely (pictures will follow just as soon as I buy a laptop and can download them from my camera.)
I have been working on my paper for the big conference here in April. Lots of constructive criticism from my sponsor Professor Hameroff which is very useful.
Be well all
The search for understanding has led into a Ph.D thesis and now across the pond to the University of Arizona

Hey Jon it's Kate from Wantage, sounds like life is treating you well out there good for you!
Tell me two things - how on earth did you end up 12 inches away from an open heart operation, and how would you explain what the study of consciousness is to a non-philosopher?!
My first thought was that it might be looking into why some people are more conscious of certain things in their environment, while others in the same environment may be conscious of entirely different things/experience the same environment very differently - but this is just a wild, uninformed guess really!
Ok, I'm slightly confused. If this is Kate then why is it posted from someone called Rosalind who I don't recognise. And more to the point, which Kate from Wantage? I can think of at least 8 who might be sending me a message.
As for the open heart surgery, the guy who is sponsoring my trip out here (Professor Stuart Hameroff M.D.) is an anesthesiologist (as well as consciosness researcher.) He let me shadow him for a day at the hospital.
Consciousness is experience. Tastes, touches, smell, the heard sound the seen colour. The What-it's-like-to-be-you-ness of being you. Simply put the experienced mental stuff.
'The What-it's-like-to-be-you-ness of being you'
It's great to see that you are getting a lot clearer and precise in your field!
Thomas, Thomas, Thomas,
I was specifically asked to explain consciousness in non-technical/non-philosopher terms. A further poitn and one which is incredibly pertinent to this field is that our ordinary concepts of objects, events and experiential goings-on are embarrassingly insufficient to get a proper grasp on consciousness.
